ERC-20 basics: what token holders should know
An accessible introduction to ERC-20 token contracts, addresses and wallet interactions.
ERC-20 is a widely used token interface on Ethereum. It defines standard methods for checking balances, transferring tokens and granting spending allowances.
Tokens and contracts
An ERC-20 token is governed by a smart contract deployed to a specific Ethereum address. A project may deploy a replacement contract, but that does not automatically transfer balances or transaction history from the original.
Wallets and explorers
Wallets may display token balances once a contract address is added. Blockchain explorers can help verify transaction histories and contract metadata. Neither a wallet icon nor a token ticker alone is proof of authenticity.
Fees and approvals
Ethereum transactions generally require network fees paid in ETH. Some interactions require token allowances; these permissions should be reviewed carefully and revoked when no longer needed.
Evaluate claims carefully
Contract verification, liquidity, token supply and third-party audits are distinct concepts. Seek evidence for each claim separately.
